Ahh Galentine’s Day… as Leslie Knope would say “It’s only the best day of the year!”
While Friendsgiving is my actual favorite day of the year, this day would definitely be a pretty close second. I love the idea. As someone who did not appreciate or even maintain real female relationships until my actual adult life, I really want to make the most of them and celebrate those relationships now. I think some of that has been brought on by becoming a mom and stepping in to my womanhood in that way and honestly, it’s sad but I’d be lying if I said finding a husband didn’t make a difference. I wish it wasn’t this way but I think there’s a lot of innate competition between females to find and secure a man. Like there’s literally not enough of them or like we completely depend on them or something. It’s so dumb, but I think we have to acknowledge it so we can push past it.
Plus, thanks to Lala and Coach, I’m obsessed with Parks and Rec and basically I just want to be Leslie Knope when I grow up except with out all the government work. That shit’s not for me. I just love all the things she stands for…
Her obsession with Joe Biden
Letting her people know how much they mean to her
Breakfast foods especially waffles
I think of Leslie Knope as kind of a state of mind that we can all step in to at any time should we choose to. It’s all about just believing you can make anything you dream of happen, dedicating yourself to what you believe in and having an interest in attractive silver foxes if that your thing! haha!
Mostly I love how much Leslie Knope loves her people and wants to show them that. Do you remember the episode when Ben Wyatt and Ann Perkins are both bidding on the waffle maker from JJ’s Diner to gift to Leslie for their special days? Just me? Ok well I love that episode. And while gifts are not my love language, I do love to make my people feel loved and I like to look back and reminisce on important days and anniversaries. So I just wanted to bring that feeling in to Galentine’s Day and let my girls know how much I love them and that I’m thankful for them.
BTW - Amy Poehler if you happen to read this one day.. I love you. I loved your book. You and Tina Fay are gold! Please keep going you. Will you come on the podcast that I plan to make?! I love you.
"Oh, it's only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas."
Leslie Knope, Parks and Rec, Season 2 Episode 16
Ok so back to the point here… I wanted to have us all together, I wanted to definitely use the barn gym and I wanted to focus on something that wasn’t getting drunk at 10 am. Since most of us enjoy being active or know each other from various gym environments I figured yoga would be a great option. My dear friend, Laura led us in a yoga practice that was so amazing and restorative. Laura had recenty finished up her yoga teacher training and I really wanted to support her in that so I just couldn’t think of any one better to lead us in that. Laura has also always demonstrated a very open heart and mind which is part of why I love her. Did I mention she’s also a badass hair dresser? Girl’s got talents.
Of course we had food and drinks because duh.
I wanted to stay on theme so I aimed for as much in the pink, red and white family as possible. This included pink La Croix, pomegranite mimosas, red and pink fruit, and veggies like tomatoes and red pepper to top on our bagels and salmon.
Another dear lady friend, Callie, hooked it up with some awesome champagne and rose from Scout and Cellar. (You can order from her at @calliemcmillinshell)
Scout and Cellar is wine company that uses no added sugars or chemicals in their wines. They also use exclusively sustainable, organic and/or biodynamic farming methods and feature low sulfites, usually under 50 ppm..
For food I definitely wanted to keep in theme with Leslie Knope and go for breakfast foods BUT I also didn’t want to stand there and make waffles all morning. Maybe next year. Or maybe when I don’t have a small child on my hands. Or maybe one day I’ll pay someone to stand there and make waffles for us! That’s really the dream, right? lol
Well friends, I think that’s really all I have to say about that. I had a great time and I hope all my sweet friends did too. I hope this is annual. We’ll see.
Until then, I want to always make sure to bring up my lady friends. After all, no one would be anywhere if it weren’t for their girls, y’all.
